Gitmo Suicide Insanity

I haven’t posted much about it yet, but Matt is absolutely right in his assessment of this nugget of insanity from the official response to the three suicides at Guantanamo.

Three detainees at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, committed suicide by hanging themselves with clothing and bedsheets, U.S. defense officials said Saturday.

“They are smart. They are creative, they are committed. They have no regard for life, either ours or their own. I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of …warfare waged against us,” Rear Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo, said in a telephone news conference.

I guess he’s right in a way. After all, it’s an act of aggression for them to deprive us of the opportunity to torture them. I mean, it’s possible to torture dead bodies, but it’s probably not as much fun, so I can understand Harris’ disappointment.

Oh well, maybe they can still kick the corpses around a little.

Our government has gone fucking insane.

We should also note that the admiral was quick to rewrite what we know of Gitmo — that the vast majority of the detainees have nothing to do with terrorism. He assumed that the men who committed suicide were dedicated terrorists. I’ll bet not. I’ll bet an investigation of their deaths (completed in six months — when most people have forgotten about this story) shows that none of them had anything to do with terrorism, but were simply, finally, ultimately sickened by the prospect of being held forever with no hope for release.

People commit suicide because living in the conditions in which they live has become unbearable. The good Admiral should be cashiered.

I can’t help myself. I have to keep responding on this post. Today, a military officer commenting on the suicides on NPR said that “martyr operations are a form of terrorism.”

Where does it say that? Honestly, some of the comments in this blog are really awful and lack any intellectual reasoning or understanding. In other words, Mark, you are a moron.

Christians were called martyrs because they were killed by the Roman government for their belief that Ceasar was not God. These guys in gitmo are killing THEMSELVES to further their cause (the distruction of the West). These guys are just like thier brothers and sisters who blow themselves up in a crowded bus of civilians.

Honestly, your inability to differentiate between historical events and your imagination is troubeling. Gosh, read a book.

BTW, the only people claiming that conditions in gitmo are poor are people who are politically opposed to the war and are attempting to undermine the war effort (i.e. treason in the case of Americans) by propagating this lie that conditions in Gitmo are bad. Shoot even the Afghans think the conditions are fine. So quit pushing your easily disproven lie.

Of course, don’t let my comments trouble you to much. Feel free to continue to think the way you do and to post such ridiculous comments and blogs. It only helps to continue the Republican party’s election wins.
