I agree that a lot of the religious right prefers gays like Foley and Haggard. I wonder how much their preference for disfunction over functional, happy lives that are outside of what they think is moral extends to other issues. I grew up hearing that sex outside of marriage was not only wrong but would be unfulfilling and that if any of us did it we would regret it. Is it any wonder that my first sexual relationship was a disaster, unfulfilling, and completely regretable? I have thought for some time that having heard those things over and over led me to have that experience. I heard that any sex outside of marriage would be unfulfilling and that's exactly what it became to me. Thankfully, I've moved on and matured, but the things you mentioned here really resonate. I wonder if the same people who prefer Ted Haggards over people like you would prefer that I have unfulfilling sexual relationships in order to "prove" to me that that's what any sex that occurs outside of marriage is. If so, how many other things would they prefer? I think we already know that many of them prefer pregnant teens to sexually active teens who don't get pregnant. Would they also wish me to be unhappy since I'm an atheist and that would "prove" that people who are "separated from god" are unhappy? I certainly wouldn't put it past some people. Some people I know can't seem to wrap their minds around the idea that I'm much happier now than I was when I went to church and did all the things that they thought I was supposed to do.
