I agree the treatment of same sex marriages/relationships is not rational… what is worse is being TRICKED into marriage, and as soon as the foreigner has his/her greencard, they want to come out of the closet like its cool. THAT IS NOT COOL, IT IS AMAZING TO SEE THE LENGHTS THAT PEOPLE WILL GO TO BECOME AMERICAN!!!! I UNDERSTAND THE PLIGHT OF GAY/HOMOSEXUAL PEOPLE BUT AT LEAST BE HONEST ABOUT WHO YOU ARE. STAY GAY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY!!!!!! THE LAWS ARE SO MESSED UP HERE THIS CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!!! YOU WILL STILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING FOR YOUR ‘SPOUSE’ EVEN AFTER DIVORCE UNTIL THE IMMIGRANT GETS HIS/HER CITIZENSHIP, OR DIES! THINK TWICE ABOUT BECOMMING ANYONES SPONSER, THE SECOND THEY GET WHAT THEY WANT….. CYA!!!!

all of this took place in VA, home of a new ban on same sex marriage and civl unions. this is a fitting karmic episode in the state’s history of bigotry.

My employer has domestic partner benefits (thankfully) but you are correct. Even after almost 25 years together I had to provide ‘proof’

Copies of drivers license with the same address.
Copies of utility bills with the same address.
A sworn statement that we are a couple.
I also added a copy of our Marriage license.
And a copy of our Domestic Partner license.

But times are a changing, when I turned this all into the HR department the young girl sorted through our ‘proof’ and as a tear welled up in her eye she looked at me and said “This is crazy, you two have been together longer than I’ve been alive” Crazy indeed!
