as a representative for the national black justice coalition, i sat in the court room to hear the arguments. the state really does not have a case at all. after it was all said and done, the state urged the court to kick it back to the general assembly so lawmakers can have a crack at it.

i think your analysis is correct about the civil unions piece IF WE DO NOT START TALKING TO BLACK LAWMAKERS NOW! i have talked to some of these folks and they are really on this civil unions kick. we must talk to these legislators as black gays, out and open, for them to even consider voting for marriage if it comes down to it.

i would also urge black gay and lesbian marylanders to join THE NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION. we are the only national black gay civil rights organization and we have an office in md. we have been talking to black lawmakers in maryland about this issue and they all say the same thing, "my constituents won't go for that. they are churchgoing folk. what about civil unions?!" they are afraid of the opinions of the "churchfolk" and the ministers. it is extremely important for us as black gays and lesbians to speak to these md black lawmakers and to support groups like the NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION because we need black voices on these issues. JOIN THE NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION NOW..... WWW.NBJC.ORG!

thanks for supporting grassroots black gay leadership.

I think this is how the victory will be won. It won't be easy, it won't be quick and it won't be painless. But when enough forward thinking states are onboard, and there has been no harm done to straight marriage, then the rest of the country will be ready to embrace the concept of gay marriage or unions.
