I wrote about my gaming habit earlier. Well, I’ve acquired a new gaming distraction. It started last week on our company retreat, when I had fun with the Nintendo Wii and joined in another game that everyone seemed to enjoy. It wasn’t something I’d have ever tried in public of in front of strangers. But once I tried it, I wanted to do it again and again. And since then I have.
I’m talking about this.
Now, I’m nowhere near as good as this kid, and I never will be. But, I’m working on it. No, I didn’t go out and buy the game or a console to play it on. A coworker of mine clued me in to an open source version called StepMania, which I promptly downloaded along with some song packs, and tried out by using the keyboard to follow the steps.
By last Saturday, I was at BestBuy getting a USB compatible dance pad. Since then I’ve spent 30 minutes to an hour dancing around my office at home, after everyone’s gone to bed. Not only was I surprised to find that I still had a few moves left in me, but I worked up a bit of a sweat. It may be that I’m also getting a cardio workout, having found a form of exercise that I actually like.
I’m still learning my way around StepMania, but I understand you can load your favorite MP3s into it and create steps for them. After listening to my 80s playlist on the way to work this morning, I think I might be inspired to put together an 80s inspired set or two just for fun.
