"Craig claimed he was reaching for piece of paper on the floor. The cop says there was no paper on the floor. So, Craig may have been reaching for something, but it wasn’t paper, though it may begin with the same letter."

Okay, I maybe totally stupid, but what starts with a "P" that Sen. Craig could have been searching for? If it is unprintable, maybe another clue might help.

I generally agree that it isn't crime worthy to -ask- for anonymous sex in an airport bathroom (or anywhere else for that matter). However - I think it is crime -having- anonymous sex in an airport bathroom. So if this is a problem in the Mpls-StP airport - how does the airport respond to this issue? Personally I don't see why shame isn't a tactic here.

a) man propositions officer
b) officer pulls badge
c) officer says "don't do that here"
d) man leaves in a fit of shame

Then again - that may be overly optimistic especially since fines levied go to the airport.

Its worth noting that the Mpls-StP airport has its own police force separate from the surrounding city and county. And they are known for their secrecy.

Someone made a good point on another blog and that was, why is it a crime to ask another adult for consensual sex? I know that the man is a closeted hypocrite who is creating an environment where being openly gay is considered "lewd" but what did he actually do? He asked another man to have anonymous sex. Is that really crime worthy?

You are right, being in the closet does effect one's brain. At an early age it causes a division, a split in who one is. And as time goes on the split erodes every aspect of who a man is.

He can be helped but the road is a long and hard one. Ironically, I am split too, as I work with men like this professionally. On one hand I feel the pain he is in. However, his disgusting use, and abuse of power, disgusts me. Who knows how he has used his power over the decades to take advantage of unknowing boys and men who needed his help?

It seems to me that had he stood trial, he might perhaps have had a decent chance of getting a not guilty. Somebody tapping his foot? Sounds iffy. I don’t claim to know these things but for a prostitution case, soliciting a swap of money for sex has to be pretty clear. Point being, he could have stood trial. Who was his lawyer - that’s what I want to know.

Ah, but there would be no exchange of money here. Cruising is something different from prostitution. In fact, there may be little to no verbal communications between participants. So the only"confirmation" would, in effect, be consummation.

The other thing, he could have gone to trial and gotten a not guilty. But could he have entered a guilty plea because he knew what else might come up in the course of a trial? If not in court then in the press as the trial was going on?

Peace, Terrance, and thanks for the link.

Putting on my lawyer hat, what I find most interesting is that twenty minutes or not much longer after pleading guilty, it seems, Team Craig was braying about how he regrets his guilty plea and denies his guilt. I don't know Minnesota law or procedure, but in Maryland, if you plead guilty to an offense carrying jail, you have to state in a guilty plea litany that you are pleading guilty because you are, in fact, guilty. Otherwise, it gets thrown out and you stand trial.

I would like to say thank you for publicizing LGBT hate crimes. The more I read, the more I realize that so much is being looked over without a care in the world. So much VERY WRONG stuff. So thank you for hbeing one more source of information.

I am fascinated by the cultural differences between generations. There is this whole culture of sneaking around bathrooms and parks and secret hand signals that I never was exposed too (and quite frankly don't want to experience). I don't know one person my age (35) or younger that does this. So it still blows my mind every time this happens and that it happens to a sitting senator. Than again our representatives are not elected for their intelligence.
