I can sympathize with Condoleeza Rice getting fed up with racist, sexist people, as I'm sure Terrance does. But the point of bringing up the anecdote is to examine the way in which she struck back. I can understand that sometimes, it's easy to overreact when you've had a long day or whatever. Goodness knows I've reacted in ways that exceed the slight by several orders of magnitude!

But the thing is, this is a story told with pride by a good friend. So it sounds like this is an incident that she's proud of, rather than an instance of a woman, tired of being discriminated against, overreacting. I think this is the difference that "liberals" and decent people of all colors take issue with.

1. Where did it say the clerk said something racist?

2. I'm not a "white liberal."

3. Read the tag line of the blog.

4. If you want to talk about "being fair to black people" we can totally go there.

Okay, suppose you're shopping at a jewelry store and someone keeps showing you the costume jewelry, but you want to see the real jewelry instead. You insist on seeing the real jewelry, and tell the clerk so. The clerk says, under her breath 'faggot".

What do you do? Say nothing? Pretend it never happened? Allow the sales clerk to go about her business having abused you for being gay?

That's what happened to Rice. I have watched in utter fascination as white liberals have defended the petit racism of a store clerk who didn't know who Rice was (this was back in the Nineties at Stanford) and assumed that because she was black she couldn't afford the real jewelry, so she (Condi) had to settle for the Costume stuff. When Rice understood what was going on, she had to suffer the indignity of a racist remark.

Liberals believe, almost to a man, that Rice was in the wrong for defending her self in this case.

I am amazed, but not surprised, at the situational ethics of white liberals, and believe it to be most revealing about them. Liberals will tolerate racism when they believe it to be in their political interest to tolerate racism.

Period. End of story. Stop bullshitting everybody by telling them how fair you are to black people. Your not. It's a lie.
