I understand the fear of being completely oneself in public with my family. We were recently in a restaurant in our town, and three early-20s men were drinking and talking loudly, bordering on crudely, at the next table. I kept half an eye on them all evening, because I was a little afraid of them starting anti-gay remarks or actions in front of my son. I'm 6'3", 250+ lbs, so I'm generally not afraid of people, but I'm terrified of the idea of something happening to my son, or something happening to me that would prevent me from being able to care for him.

After the fact, I felt bad that I'd internally accused and convicted them with no evidence of bad behavior.
