From this point of view, theism is an addiction. We’re all addicted to hope — hope that the doubt and mystery will go away.

Hm... Sounds a lot like Buddhist practice of letting go of worldly attachments. :-)

Anyways, why resurrect an old (almost) dead religion, when there are plenty of polytheistic religions out there? Buddhism adapted to local folklore that I was raised in, for example, has many Buddhas / Gods that governs many different aspects of life. Similar to Greek Gods, some of the buddhas / Gods clash with each other in conflicts, symbolizing often conflicting and contradicting aspects of life.

There is a frightening trend, if you look at religion as a reflection of society and government. For Christianity and other monotheistic religions, the message is clear: there is only ONE true God, ONE right way of thinking and ONE right way to living. The parallels can be seen in the way that the U.S. is intervening in worlds far away, because it believes, there is only one right way to govern (i.e. democracy). Similarly, you see how fundamentalist Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. all opposing civil rights for LGBT folks, because they believe there is only ONE concept of family and ONE right way to live life -- everything else is just wrong. It is like witnessing the spread of imperialism throughout the world as Christianity spreads and chaos follows.

Now, I realize I'm bashing Christianity here -- and I apologize. But it's hard for me not to see it that way, because of the popularity of Christianity and the inherent absolutism in monotheistic religion, such as Christianity, that lends itself so easily to abuse.
