This is a very interesting topic. As a Christian, I do not concern myself with whether or not Jesus was actually born on the 25th of December. I do, however, feel comfortable celebrating His birth on that day. The issue that many people have is that Christians often try force everyone else to believe what they believe. Jesus IS the reason why I celebrate the season, but I am extremely OK with the idea that He might not be for others.

We must get to a point of confort in our own personal walk through life that we are confident enough with ourselves and our own beliefs that we can appreciate, accept, and respect the views of others. Similarly, with gay marriage, everyone must move beyond trying to dictate how others solidify their relationships. Christmas means many different things to different people. Even Christians get caught up in buying gifts during this time of year. So, whether you wish me a Merry Christmas, or Seasons Greetings, or extend a simple Happy Holidays, I know what it means to me and that's good enough.

Like T, I don't disagree with Martin's comments on some points. I look at it from the perspective of balance, in that the Christian religion have been using the same tactic in controversial issues like same-sex marriage vs. same-sex civil unions or Intelligent Design vs. Creationism. The whole naming thing is just the same absurdity that certain Christian religious advocates have used, just in the opposite direction.

I would argue however, Christmas in America is not really about Jesus or Christ. It is more of a mass consumerism encouraged by the Christian religion. What does the fat dude in the red suit have anything to do with the birth of Jesus Christ? Or that gift under the dead tree? Under these rationale, it would seem, that renaming Christmas to something else is certainly appropriate.

Martin demonstrates his ignorance of Christianity when he objects to "Xmas". X (the Greek "Chi", first letter of "Christ" in Greek) has been a symbol for Christ for at least 1000 years. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas.
