The Devil & Pope Benedict

The Daily Mail says that the Pope will wage war on Satan in 2008, with an army of exorcists.

The Pope has ordered his bishops to set up exorcism squads to tackle the rise of Satanism.

Vatican chiefs are concerned at what they see as an increased interest in the occult.

They have introduced courses for priests to combat what they call the most extreme form of “Godlessness.”

Each bishop is to be told to have in his diocese a number of priests trained to fight demonic possession.

The initiative was revealed by 82-year-old Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican “exorcistinchief,” to the online Catholic news service Petrus.

“Thanks be to God, we have a Pope who has decided to fight the Devil head-on,” he said.

Or maybe not.

Catholic World News says the Vatican denies it.[Via Secular Outpost.]

The Vatican has denied a report that Pope Benedict XVI (bio – news) plans a new emphasis on exorcisms.

In an interview with Italy’s Petrus web site, which concentrates on Vatican affairs, Father Gabriele Amorth, the official exorcist of the Rome diocese, said that the Holy Father would soon undertake a new campaign to combat demonic possession. “Thank God,” said the Italian priest, “we have a Pope who has decided to confront the devil head-on.”

…But Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, flatly denied the Petrus report. The papal spokesman said: “Pope Benedict XVI has no intention of ordering local bishops to bring in garrisons of exorcists to fight demonic possession.”

Still I’m kind of hoping it’s true, and that Ratzenberger will go off on a “satanic panic” and leave gay folks and our families alone.

Oh wait.

Homosexual marriages are part of “a new ideology of evil” that is insidiously threatening society, Pope John Paul says in a new book published Tuesday.

…In one section about the role of lawmakers, the Pope takes another swipe at gay marriages when he refers to “pressures” on the European Parliament to allow them.

“It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man,” he writes

Well, if the Pope did issue the order, but is just too embarrassed to admit it publicly, he might enlist the services of Ellel Ministries’ Jill Sothern, apparently an expert on the possession by “the spirit of homosexuality.” [Via Ex-Gay Watch.]

…When we engage in ungodly sex, we are enjoining our spirit to the demonic spirit behind it, and this destroys our lives.

“Ungodly sex allows our spirit to be penetrated by the demonic power behind the ungodly act. In fact, homosexuality is self-destructive behaviour.”

…”So this spirit of homosexuality has an appetite for homosexual acts, and is using your body for its own appetite. When a homosexual person confesses and repents the sin, we can tell the spirit to leave and the homosexual desire will also go,” said Southern, who has ministered into the lives of homosexuals in her country, many of whom have turned over a new leaf.

  1. I thought the modern party line was that the Vatican sanctions exorcisms only as a symbolic palliative (i.e., a placebo) for the uneducated and illiterate who are convinced that a mentally ill family member is posessed, so long as the family agrees to seek mental health care as well.

  2. I’m having trouble with the term “Ungodly sex” — from which I ask, what exactly is “Godly sex”? I would think most people would agree, God does not perform sex acts; Jesus was the product of immaculate conception — where there is no sex involved. Therefore, if “Godly sex” is likely no sex at all. The concept of “Ungodly sex” applies to any sexual act homo- and heterosexual. To associate “Ungodly sex” with homosexual sex (most likely male anal intercourse) reflects the Pope’s intrinsic homophobic and bigot nature

As far as exorcism? Please… someone has watched too much Hollywood-made horror movies.

The Pope also claims that traditional (i.e. heterosexual) institution of family instills values that promotes peace in the world; any one who is hostile to that institution, even unknowingly (i.e. homosexuals) threatens peace. It is such a ridiculous claim — since those who advocate violence, conflict and war are all heterosexuals who are vehemently anti-homosexual.

The sad part about all of this is, one of the most powerful and popular religion in the world is the led by a bigoted homophobe, while the most powerful nation in the world is led by an idiot. To borrow comments made in John Armstrong’s book, God vs. the Bible:

Sectarian atrocities are not, as Christian and Muslim apologists like to claim, unusual occurrences brought on by those who don’t understand the “peaceful” nature of their religion. They are the inevitable consequences of believing that your religion serves a perfectly good god and that the only other power is a devil who seeks to destroy that religion. This worldview creates an inherently paranoid faith that will literally demonize all infidels and apostates.

  3. Well, that clears it up! Being gay ain’t nature or nurture, it’s a “demonic spirit!”

Of course, if you’re Christian but not Roman Catholic, according to this Pope, you’re not a real Christian anyway, so might as well get in some practice at demonic sex before you burn in the fires of Hell, I guess.

Meanwhile, “Ungodly sex allows our spirit to be penetrated” proves yet again that these religious authoritarians got some serious issues. Maybe if they had better sex themselves, they’d leave everyone else alone? At least a little bit?

I’ve often written it before, but these people don’t want equal rights, which they already have, they want power over others, including people who don’t even belong to their church. Hey, if you could make decisions for yourself (a crucial element of the New Testament, actually) you might choose something they don’t like! And then, where would we be? With demonic sex! Hot, hot, demonic sex! Mmm. (Do ya have to be gay to partake? Surely it’s possible to be straight and still earn damnation!)

  4. Personally, I love getting my spirit penetrated, I don’t know about anyone else but I think it’s the cat’s pajamas!
