G'ah. Yes it's hypocritical. Jesus as portrayed in the Bible was welcoming and inclusive to the point that the leaders of the day tried to make it out to be a bad thing. Paul has nothing but contempt for the Corinthians for resorting to secular courts to resolve inter-member matters.
Here we have a "church" falling foul of all the above, and even a tyrannical hypocrisy that it's a "private ecclesiastical matter" - talk about trying to have it both ways.

Truly saddening.

Perhaps I am just a cold-blooded atheist but I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone involved.

Plenty of atheists are capable of having empathy for others, Bruce, so it's not that.

This same behavior is being carried out in the 4th largest city of America (Houston, TX) in the person of Pastor Kevin L. Washington. He has single handedly nearly destroyed a historic 90 year ministry by raping; I mean relocating the meeting place for church meetings. But first, he solemnly removed altar prayer, the Baptist Training Union and the usage of the office of the deacons. He then held meetings to convince the church leadership (new leaders which he appointed) to unanimously vote to move the church an hours drive away from its current location to hold services in the clubhouse of a senior citizens residential facility. Prior to that move, the observance of the monthly communion was discontinued without warning. Sunday School was discontinued. After a few months of worship services being held out of reach for the older members to attend on a regular basis, the church building was sold "as is" for approximately 200K. The membership has dwindled to approximately 35 members (included women and children). The majority of the older members have moved their membership or they or no longer attending services.

In a leadership meeting the Pastor reportedly told one of the trustees and longtime members "Don't let the door knob hit you where the good Lord split you" because of a conflict between the two.

What would Jesus do? I don't think he would "do" ministry as the illustrious pastor of Concord Baptist Church (Houston) is currently "doing."

In the midst of all that has occured, he has even managed to father a child(ren) within the congregation. This son resembles him moreso than the sons of his current marriage. The mother and sister of the said child is not welcomed to attend the services.

Woe be unto the shepherd that scatters the sheep... God help him (Pastor Kevin Lamar Washington) before destroys any more lives spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially.

It's always sad to see a dying church shoot itself in the foot like Allen Baptist. It is still good to remember that the Jesus described in the gospels was not known for toeing the line but rather for declaring rules unnecessary when they got in the way of helping people.
Thanks, T, for this.

Perhaps I am just a cold-blooded atheist but I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone involved. Not for the pastors, not for the parishioners. Okay, maybe for the cops who got pulled away from meaningful work to settle the pettiest of petty crap.

My experience is that houses of worship are actually like very polite knife-fights where no one will admit bringing a knife. Even in the superficially liberal Unitarian church, there is a joke about the "rule of 19": in any given congregation, 19 people want the pastor fired on any given day. When I see church bulletins, I see a lot about bake sales, a lot about choir practice, a lot about miscellaneous but not a lot about the business about becoming a better, more moral human being (and by moral I am not speaking specifically about the morality of genital contact, which is what most people think "immoral" refers to.)

I like religious architecture, history (replete with its mass murders), some religious music. I like a lot of religious people too. But if religion and morality had something to do with one another, the South would have either gone atheist or gone 100% free of slavery overnight. Instead, the most religious part of the country remains the most unapologetically and nostalgically racist. That's why they call racist political stratgies "Southern strategies", a term better otherwise reserved for the selling of pork barbecue and sweet tea.

What's the least racist part of the country? Historically, the urban Pacific Northwest, also the least religious. A much reduced history of segregation, relative ethnic harmony (though hardly perfect.) The NW has skinheads too, but they are in the rural and .... religious parts of that region east of the mountains and in Idaho, the second home of the historically racist Mormon church.

You fund an authoritarian institution voluntarily for years, you are equitably estopped from complaining when it moves to oppress you.

This is just astonishing. What hypocrisy. And aren't the "sinners" the ones who most need to be attending church anyway, according to their Bible? *rolls eyes*

No disrespect to anyone's religious beliefs, but in these instances, the worshipers behaved like someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder -- you go to church and pay them to tell you that you are a sinner and must repent -- for which you get the false hope of achieving happiness.

Thank goodness I'm not involved in any of that bullshit anymore...I remember a woman from a church I attended when I was young -- truly one of the kindest, most compassionate women that you will ever meet -- dismissed from her church because she allowed her daughter to (horrors) dance at the daughter's birthday party. It is fucking AMAZING to me the sort of brainwashing that happens at evangelical churches...
