Lucas, it gets to that point because the U.S. electorate–right, left, and “center”– has steadily forsaken the practice of reason for the gratification that accompanies self-indulgent, self-righteous, knee-jerk emotional reactions. In short: we’ve become nation too lazy to think. The separation of church and state is a principle, not a feeling. As such, it requires consideration.

Clinton missed an opportunity, for sure, but I’m more disturbed by Obama’s incessant religious rhetoric. That the left makes all kinds of excuses for his faith-based pandering shows how very far from considered this country has become.

I simply cannot fathom how it happened…. How does a completely secular government get to the point where an elected official a member of a state-approved religion is a requirement?

This comment has nothing to do with your topic, and for that I apologize. It’s a character flaw. But I just wanted to mention that about two weeks ago I read Essex Hemphill’s “Commitments” (as well as a couple other works of his) and it hasn’t left my mind since then. So I did I a google search for it, to show a friend, and came upon your April 2004 posting that had Whitman’s We two boys together clinging AND Commitments, which is a nice coincidence because right before I read Hemphill I was introduced to Whitman, and that was one of the poems that struck a chord in me.
