Let's see... The Vietnam War from America's point of view lasted from about 1963-1973 (the draft ended the year before it would have included me). About 58 thousand Americans died. I suspect the most memorable protest songs started to appear in 1968, about year 5. By then probably 29 thousand had died (I simply took half of 58K). In the Iraq war we are only now ending year 5 and only 4000 dead. I suspect we'll get those popular culture protest songs if the war continues, remains unfavorable, and the body count jumps. Or if McCain becomes prez.

I have been meaning for a *while* now to blog about how badly that John Mayer song pisses me off! I mean seriously!

I'm only 23, and I feel the same way, so either that can relive your old-fart feelings, or I've just gotten old really fast. Either way, we're totally sharing the same sentiment here.

I dunno if my generation is just too bent-over under our student loan loads to worry about creating real change, or if too many of us just think we can fall back on Vietnam-era songs, or if that "Waiting" song really does sum up all-too-well the thought processes of too many of us, or what. Lord knows I get overwhelmed and want to throw up my hands about 50 times a day. But... ergh. People, you can do *something* and even a little is better than nothing because 100 people's 'little something' adds up!

My mom used to sing me a rather bizarre lullaby. It went something like this:

1...2...3...What are we fightin' for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn. The next stop is the state of Iran.

Granted, as a Gen X-Y punk, I am the first to admit that our modern music sucks. That said, the spirit of protest, dare I say, revolution, is very much alive in some of us.
