In California, we, domestic partners, can file jointly for the first time. However, equally irritating, the tax software couldn't deal with differences in filing statuses very well -- so we had to go through the federal process thrice -- two times to file separately for federal, then another to set joint status for state.

All of that doesn't really bother me all that much, but, as we go through the federal process for filing jointly -- our federal refund ballooned to over a whopping $4000 compared to less than $100 for both of us combined when we file separately. That just pisses me off big time and send me cursing at the computer for about half an hour.

It just shows how there is an lack of equality and the need for gay marriage. A coworker of mine recently got married noticed the same phenomenon, however, he and his wife (no kids yet) get to keep the refunds, while I had to settle for a tiny, tiny amount.

I was taken aback to find out we owed money to the Feds this year. It wasn't a huge amount, but I was surprised.
