Beyond being a gay issue, health care is an unmarried issue. There are huge opportunities for building alliances among all people who are unmarried, whether by law, choice or chance. Marriage is the on/off switch for access to health care in America (unlike in any other developed nation). The Alternatives to Marriage Project is a national nonprofit advocacy group working to remove marital status discrimination from all aspects of law and policy. AtMP wants policy makers to recognize that all singles, partners and families have health care responsibilities, and that no one should have to get married, civil unioned or domestic partnered to have access to health care benefits. Please join us!

My wife and I are still married, even though we have been separated for over four years, and she has a boyfriend. I have insurance, and she doesn't. I can't, in good conscience, leave her without insurance. And if we got divorced, the COBRA insurance costs more. I make more than she does, so I would end up paying for COBRA.

I suppose if things got ugly around our boy, I would divorce her just to protect my rights. But barring that, I consider it immoral for me to deprive her of insurance.

I'll bet the number of couples that stay together for insurance benefits alone would be staggering. Luckily, the company I work for is pretty "gay-friendly", so me and my girlfriend get to take advantage of the "domestic partner" insurance benefits. Personally, I think insurance should cover anyone in your household if you want to pay for it.
