Eartha

We came home last night after a long day spent opening presents (putting them together or hooking them up, in my case), cooking, enjoying holiday dinner with friends, and put two happy, exhausted children to bed. I’d put Parker to bed, after “just one more game ” on the Nintendo Wii he/we got this holiday, when my husband gave me the news, which he’d just read online.

It’s funny, when the death of someone you didn’t know, and who didn’t know you, stops you in your tracks. But that’s what happened. “What?!” I exclaimed, as though some favorite aunt or uncle had passed away. And then uttered an “Mmph,” quietly, under my breath and to no one in particular.

It wasn’t because I knew her personally, though, but because the world lost a touch of its audacity when it lost Eartha Kitt.

Maryland’s Water Main Drama

What was that about investing in our crumbling infrastructure, again?

I ask because a water main somewhere in Montgomery County, Maryland, ruptured today and washed out much of my day. Though my experience was nothing compared to what some people had to deal with.

How It’s Done

I haven’t written much about the whole Rick Warren controversey yet, though I have something in mind. (Let’s see if I actually get time to write it.) But in the meantime, I wanted to point to a terrific appearance by Mike Rogers (of Blogactive and PageOneQ) on MSNBC.

I’m a big fan of Mike’s even moreso after his deft handling of a right wing minster, there t defend the Warren pick, etc. Mike threw him completely off his game.

It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s Meltdown

This is a man’s world
But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

He’s lost in the wilderness
He’s lost in bitterness

~ James Brown, “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”

It’s been written many times already that 2008 was quite a year for women. Whether it was a good year or an “annus horribilis,” may depend on whom you ask, but the financial crash and ensuing downturn suggest that if it hasn’t been a horrible year, it hasn’t exactly been an “annus mirabilis.”

Who Needs Pardon?

[Ed Note: Graphic NSFW images below the fold.]

As I write this, I’m watching president George W. Bush grant pardon to Stars and Stripes in 2003, on a television show about turkey. At the same time, I’m reading about another who seeks pardon from president Bush, and pondering the irony that the prisoner should have to seek pardon from someone whose crimes — the number and nature of which vary depending on whom you ask — outnumber his own and outweigh them in seriousness.

Not to mention who has the bigger body-count.

His name is bound to inspire fits of apoplexy, and plenty of people won’t read any further once he’s mentioned, but John Walker Lindh is seeking pardon.

Up With Downward Mobility

Every once in a while, an idea gels in my head and I dismiss it, thinking to myself “Nah. I gotta be missing something. It can’t be that. And then I hear someone who probably knows a lot more than I do about the subject at hand say pretty much what I’d been thinking all along.

That was the case with my long-standing suspicion that one of the main goals of conservative politics and policy is to drive as many people as possible into downward mobility.
