- The Business of the Ideological Media Is Business –
Conservative media is a political force, but first and foremost it's a business. And that business' primary customers have grown used to a particular product. Those customers are, above all, older white men, and the product is that particular combination of anger, resentment, and contempt for people outside the tribe that has characterized conservative media for so long. Fox News has the oldest audience of any of the cable channels, and they like what Hannity, O'Reilly, and the rest of the gang have been giving them just fine. They like hearing that Barack Obama is a socialist America-hater destroying our country. They like the culture war. It keeps them coming back. So if you were Sean Hannity, and you understood that perfectly well, what incentive would you have to change?
- Post-election gloating is a patriotic duty –
Many people are surprised by the intensity of the Schadenfreude being directed at the Republicans right now. Everywhere you turn, there’s so much gleefully mean gloating, from Rachel Maddow’s barely contained rant about all the things that really are true about Obama and this country, to Jon Stewart’s hilarious mockery of Fox’s election night meltdown, to the whitepeoplemourningromney Tumblr, the left is wallowing in the misery of the right. Some are decrying it as just plain nasty and unpatriotic. But this glee is actually quintessentially American. This unfiltered joy is straight out of every feel-good movie about losers finally having their day, from "Animal House" to "The Bad News Bears" to "Revenge of the Nerds" to "Big Fat Liar." Since the time of the original Tea Party, America loves it when the geeks and outsiders finally stick it to their rich and entitled tormentors.
- D.L. Hughley: RIP America! –
To the rest of us, the end of a certain group being in complete control of the government, and by default the United States, is progress. If the reelection of President Obama by a large populace of the American electorate is the death of America, then I'm glad to see it go. There can be no rebirth without death. I'm glad the America that worked for some Americans while leaving others out in the cold is dead.
- The War for Marriage Equality Expands –
This is the great civil-rights struggle of our time. Again, it shouldn't be subject to the ballot. Whatever. Nothing quite matches the thrill of seizing your opponent's crooked rule-book, thumbing through the pages, and then throttling him senseless with the thing.
Sometimes even your schadenfreude is respectable.
- America’s roaring twentysomethings: how young voters won the culture wars | Harry J Enten –
2012 saw historic support for pro-choice positions, gay marriage and marijuana legalization – thanks to liberal-leaning youth
- How the Democratic Super PACs Won –
In 2012, they were better organized than their Republican counterparts, says Rodell Mollineau.
- Commentary: How the GOP has become its own worst enemy –
In the first place, any sudden GOP outreach to those it spurned while courting angry older white men must unavoidably appear conniving, self-conscious and self-serving. And once you get past the problem of appearances, there is the simple question of what it will take to undo the damage the party has inflicted upon itself with those groups.
- Dear Angry White Conservatives Mourning Romney’s Loss: Chill Out –
The right-wing media failed you. They lied and told you that Mitt Romney would win in a landslide. They cooked up stories about voter fraud and rigged polls that were biased against Republicans. The right-wing media machine betrayed you, its audience.
- The Vatican Hates Gays –
Its latest claim, that gay marriage causes polygamy, is as absurd as it is offensive. Where does it stop?
- Romney Is President –
Team Romney has every reason to be shellshocked. Its candidate, after all, resoundingly won the election of the country he was wooing.
Mitt Romney is the president of white male America.
